So Far, So Wrong [POLL]

I think there is more going on at West Ham at the minute than immediately meets the eye.

At least that is the only excuse I can find for all the peculiar activity that has been going down at God’s Green Acre (Thanks Kirk!).

The general consensus amongst people on my first post about Zamora is that we shouldn’t be selling him. At least not in preference to Carlton Cole. Many people agreed that he wasn’t necessarily the best player since sliced bread, but that his dedication and commitment to our club is enough to try and hold onto him.

So why is Curbishley looking to offload him to Fulham where he is having his medical this week? I would argue that the majority of loyal fans at Upton Park would rather see Zamora pulling on the Claret and Blue next season rather that Carlton Cole.

Perhaps we are just not physically able to sell Cole. I’m not a boo boy, and I’m not denying that Cole had a handful of decent performances at the end of last year, but that does not defend his sometimes appalling performances at other times during the season.

One thing Cole does seem to almost have going for him compared to Zamora is his fitness and lack of injury. Then again, Zamora played the final few games of the year with an injury such is his dedication to the shirt. We always talk about it, the fact that 9 times out of 10, a player who shows loyalty to our club and a desire to play is worth so much to the fans. So why does Curbs think it makes sense to sell him? On a similar note, the fact that Anton makes a conscious effort to run into each corner of the ground at the beginning of each respective half speaks volumes about his desire to play in Claret and Blue and bring the fans what they want. That however should be saved for another day…especially if we lose him to Villa or Newcarsele.

What it all boils down to in my opinion is once again the Tevez affair/saga/mash-up/mix-up/balls-up. All that we have witnessed (or not witnessed) this transfer window (offloading Zamora/Solano and employing Kia/welcoming Brown back) basically says to me that the case is not as cut and dry as we all originally thought it was.

So far outwardly Curbs has been making all the wrong moves, particularly in the eyes of the fans. Inwardly however, I think it is a different story.

Mind you, why would he sell Cole? After all, he did used to play for Charlton.

Please vote below in possibly one of the most simple polls I have ever made…would you like to keep Bobby Zamora or Carlton Cole? Or maybe you would get rid of both of them?

Sam

Wore these to every game this year. They may not be lucky, but they're comfy:

    1. Zampora is average…………Cole leads the line better. No big deal…….£6m is an amazing fee to get for him. Take it and run.

    2. Are you really that fickle?
I dont disagree that Cole doesn’t have the necessary quality in finishing to really warrant a place in the team, maybe the squad. However, to call what he did last season ’sometimes appalling performances’ is wrong. He did fantastically well for a large part of the season, at one stage having more assists more than any other person in the league. Just wondered how many games you went to and if all, then how blinkered you my be by the shockingly dull end to the season. Stop the Cole bashing, its unnecessary, and not justified.

    3. I think it comes down to finance and tactics.

Cole is more suitable for playing one up front, which is a favoured tactic of Curbs (particularly away from home) plus his age gives him a better upside than Zamora, who is pretty much the finished article.

Secondly, Fulham appear to have made a reasonable offer for Bobby, whilst some have suggested it is a handsome offer, when you look at the current fees being thrown around for untried and unknown players, £5 – 6 Mil isn’t over the top for a proven prem player.

However, how much would you get for Carlton Cole?

It appears Curbs (Or perhaps Nani) have got something in the pipeline to replace him, perhaps Gudjohnson? Which I think would be an upgrade over Bobby.

I am all in favour of keeping home supporting talent and the genuine loyalty he’s shown, should be cherished and not forgotten.

    4. Sam:
I think you may have hit the nail on the head. The Blades/Hammers case may not be that cut and dried. The peace making between the new Chairman/Kia/Brown and the recent news that the tribunal that started in June initially stated that the clubs need not announce the results until August, and now we are told not until September is cause for some anxiety. The High Courts, hearing the same case didn’t take that long.

On the other hand a more positive view is that the players back from injury, particularly – Bellamy, Dyer, Faubert and a return of Ashton to form could preclude the need for any major signings.

Nontheless, neither of the above will hide the weaknesses we have, particularly in midfield and in width. It may just be that the Hammers management have invoked a media blackout as best they can.
Over the past two years West Ham has been wonderful fodder for the press. It would be great if we could come out with an August surprise – like we did with Tevez and Mascherino two years ago. Only this time without the residual damage that trailed along afterward. If this is true and with the new Football Director and the rehabilitation of Kia this kind of surprise is a distinct possibility.

My gut suggests that it the reason for the perceived inaction is a combination of all three of the above.

    6. Hate to see Zamora go, but he really does deserve to play every game he is fit for. If we can’t give it to him I’m happy to thank him for all he’s acheived and let him get that regular playing time.

    7. @ Tom, I did point out that I am not a boo boy. I may also like to point out that I do have a season ticket and am therefore completely within my right to make my feelings known about players.

This post was not written to be a dig about Cole, it was written almost as a defence for Zamora…and the poll results do show that if people had to sell Cole or Zamora, it would definitely be Zamora. So i’m not on my own in feeling the way I do about Cole.

I’m not trying to take away the effort he put in at times, but he is not claret and blue through and through. He even said when he signed that he “is using west ham as a stepping stone for bigger things”.

I’m pretty sure that Zamora isn’t arrogant enough to think he can use our club for bigger things, he pulls on the shirt each week because he loves to play for us. That is why I think we should keep him.
