The Carlton Cole Debate [POLL]

So, the news today is that Carlton Cole is close to signing a new 4-year deal (The Mirror). Admittedly it is The Mirror, but it got me thinking.

There is a big debate as to whether Carlton Cole is good enough, not only for us, but also as a Premiership player. We have had to endure so many games where Cole has misfired and has been lethargic, yet other times he works himself into the ground which genuinely impresses.

Personally I feel that we do desperately need someone in his position fulfilling the role of ‘target man’ so to speak, but for me he comes with too many frustrations. He hardly seems to win headers, his first touch resembles that of a baby elephant and he doesn’t score enough. Three key factors that make up a quality striker.

With that in mind, I thought a quick poll could help conclude whether a decent cross-section of West Ham fans would be pleased or devestated at Cole signing a new deal:

[poll id="9"]

Just a quick question, if Arsenal are entitled to compensation over the Walcott injury (because he was away on international duty), are/were we also entitled to it when Dean Ashton broke his ankle during an England training session? We could claim well over a years wages…

COYI!

Wore these to every game this year. They may not be lucky, but they're comfy:

    1. Carlton Cole is a good enough Premier League striker, he’s shown us this even despite his poor goalscoring record. His workrate and his power is excellent, he’s a good target man.
BUT, as we saw in the last game, Zola likes to play the ball on the ground as often as possibly and this is where Cole is not good enough. Ball to feet, running at defenders, having to pass or shoot is not his strong point. His decision make is poor, his control and skill is poor and for this reason, he does not fit into Zola’s team.

    2. He’s only young, getting him for four years would be good for us as he will improve over time.

    3. Carlton Cole has some rare qualities in the Premiership. Size Speed and hustle, however, his work ethic needs improving along with his goal scoring.
Given that Dean Ahton would be first choice, he’s a pretty decent rotational back-up…. Keep him.

    4. I would keep him and see how he goes under Zola, if anyone can get him to be a bit more composed it is Zola.
With 3 forwards as we are tending to see out there it gives us an option against different opposition when you need ugly football to win. Get Deano back and Bellamy running at the defences Carlton can have a role to play but given our lack of fire power we need something fast. any thoughts on who should start up front? We have Bellamy,Sears, Di Michelle, Tristan, and Cole and no one looks like scoring. Upson as Centre Forward. lol

    6. Spector has been given a contract extension without Zola seeing him play in the first team? Now Cole is being offered a new deal?
Personally, i don’t feel either player is up to Premier League football. So with the transfer window just 5 weeks away, are West Ham simply just inflating their values for possible sales, or fending off potential buyers ? !
Talking of the transfer window, i see Tony Adams has said that he’ll leave Portsmouth if Jermaine Defoe leaves in the window. With the ‘poison dwarfs’ record todate of shafting his employers and now Agent i,d grease up and start packing your bags now Tony !!!!
