More Bad News For West Ham Fans as the Credit Crunch Hits Hard

So Carlton Cole has signed a new 5-Year contract.

Devestated.

That for me however is not the bad news, although I don’t really rate Cole. What is really disappointing is the comments from him and Scott Duxburry in light of the agreement.

Firstly, Cole:

I am here for quite a while so it is time to knuckle down.-BBC Sport

Sorry, what Cartlon? He’s pulling our legs right?

Time to knuckle down? What and the last three years weren’t. It has certainly shown if that is what he thinks.

He may as well have just said:

I’ve been here for three long years and never done much. I wasn’t even planning to stay for very long as I thought I was good enough to play for bigger clubs. West Ham (that is the team I play for right?) were supposed to just be a “stepping stone”. It’s not really turned out how I wanted though, so I’ve decided that I might settle for the hand I’ve been dealt and actually do something for the team I am playing for now.

I am so unimpressed with this comment. It has genuinely made me cross. How much does he not want to be here? He never did and he never will.

If it’s any consolation Carlton, I am as disappointed as you are that you’ve signed for another 5-years and I intend on making that as clear as you have.

Onto Duxbury:

This news underlines that as a club we are thinking only of moving forward and are on a sound financial footing - BBC Sport

Actually it doesn’t at all and don’t continue to try and pull the wool over our eyes. What this really means is that we have no money whatsoever to invest in a quality striker that we so desperatly need. I doubt there is a single club in the Premier League who would consider signing Carlton Cole as “thinking only of moving forwards”. If they did, then he would have had people frantically trying to sign him in the summer.

He has been better this year, but I remember last year thinking that in the transfer window we will get rid of Cole and LBM. I am still left thinking the same.

Perhaps he is actually phenomenal in training and a completely different player. I doubt that very much.

I am sorry to have spilt this rant onto your laps, but I am fed up with hearing Duxbury treat us like fools. I am also fed up with our ’striker’ who doesn’t really want to be here. I know that the opinion is pretty mixed on him amongst fans (have a look at last week’s poll) but as far as I am concerned he has played 11 league games and scored in 3. We need to bring in someone who is going to be scoring more regularly than that because unfortunately goals are not coming from any other positions

How many more years does Cole think he’ll need before he ever reaches top form? I’ll go as far to say that in the next 5 years we would have sold him to QPR where he will continue to disappoint because he thinks he is good enough to play for Wolves.

I want to underline that this is just my opinion and there are plenty of people I know who will disagree but I am interested to hear what other people think on the matter of Cole and our long-term aspirations…

    1. I have heard rumours that strongly suggest that CC is “unsellable” eg – would fail a medical!
At the end of the day, they have probably given him a few more quid a week.
Like you ,the only sign that the club is moving forward would be the announcement that Scot Duxbury will be leaving the club forthwith, if not sooner!
A new contract for Green/Upson/Collins would be a show of intention, not this patronising pap from a man that has shamed the club and its supporters for far too long.

    2. I think you are filling Coles comments with feelings you had long before this interview. I heard him deliver the same “player bullshit” that is almost always produced at séances like this.

Cole is not my favourite, but I doubt he is the only one in the West Ham team that does not see us as the pinnacle of any football career. It breaks my heart, but I have to live with that.

I also have no good feelings about Dux, but his habit to try to fool us most of the time cannot be taken as a sign that the totally opposite is always be true.
As with any other statement from official sources (or anybody else for that matter) it needs to be looked at with scepticism. But Cole was one player that would bring in money if sold, and to keep him (or sell him for more money because of his long term contract) is to me at least not a dead giveaway that there is no future at this club.

    3. Completely agree. I don’t understand how anyone rates CC as a good player at all. I must be watching a different game to other poeple but what i see most from him is someone who fails to control the ball first time, gets tackled far to easily for a player who prime game is meant to be holdin the ball up, doesnt score and doesnt ever look like scoring and only heads the ball when there was no-one running onto it that time.

oh well, only another 5 years to watch it

    4. The Duxbury comment I agree with! He does treat us like the idiot he is! But as far as Cole is concerned, Give the guy a break!

So you took what he said to heart, I’m VERY sure he didn’t mean it the way you took it! He is always the first to admit that he has had some problems, both on and off the pitch!

But you simply can’t fault the guys work-rate! He always gives 100% and yes he has some off days but he never stops trying and in my opinion he is improving week in, week out!

I, for one am glad to have him for another 5 years!

Sorry buit your comments on cole were way off the mark!

    5. Let’s look at it like this; we could have let his contract run out and he’d go someplace else as a free agent; or provided we’re not paying him too much, we can trade him at our pleasure in our own good time and maybe make a few quid on him.

There’s no question; his comment clearly shows that he can put out more than he has over the past three years. Maybe if Curbs ever gets a job we can sell him to his friend.

    8. @ Fourteen12:

the trouble is, if you put me in a west ham shirt, i would give more than 100%. a lot more.

although it is very admirable, his work rate alone does not make him a player worth keeping. if he was holding the ball up wel then ok. if he was making assissts, then ok. if he was scoring, then ok.

but he doesnt do any of those, he just works hard

surely there has to come a time where someone realises that for all his effort, he doesnt actually produce anything.

      so frustrating

    9. Freddyfreddy, unlike Fourteen12 i think your comments, on what we have seen of Cole todate, are spot on.
If he’s improving week in and week out then he’s obviously not giving 100% is he. Sadly, as for hold up play, Carlton Cole couldn’t trap a bag of cement – nor could he hit a cows backside with a banjo!!!
That said….none of our other so called strikers seem capable of displacing Cole to the bendh. It’s time and an opportunity, for any of our pool of strikers to prove to Zola and the fans that they should be first on the team sheet. The midfield are chipping in and the defence are finally keeping a few clean sheets. Time now for the forwards to play their part !!

    10. I do not think for one minute that CC will be with us for the next 2 years let alone 5. It is true that his game has improved greatly over the last 2 seasons, but he will never be a goalscorer as he is not good enough to be a complete striker. He has worked very hard to become a handful for defenders, thats all, and I would never question his effort and work rate but West Ham need a player far superior in his position. I had him down with several other players who are not good enough to be moved on in January to make way for some much needed class.CC does, fortunately, have his admirers and may well go quickly.

    11. I can’t believe you wasted your time and mine slagging off Carlton Cole!!! I think the boy had a great game at Sunderland, is improving all the time and always gives 100% for us. What kind of comments do you expect from a footballer who’s just signed a new contract? No players ever say anything worth commenting on to the media, they’re not the brightest people on the planet, they’re footballers! I do wish people would stop coating our players so much it really does no-one any good at all.

    14. @ Martin:

I personally would quie like him to say something like:

“I am delighted to be signing a new contract. I hope to repay the manager and the fan’s faith in me”

amongst a few other niceties that can always be overlooked.

It is about time you pulled you finger out and “knuckled down” Carlton, because so far you have been a shocking signing
