“But the difference is he plays players who are in form. That is the difference – from the back to the front of the team.
“If you are in form, you will play – and if you are playing well, you know you will carry on doing so.”
Robert Green on Capello
That quote is from Rob Green last month speaking about his chances on making the World Cup squad.
For me, it raises two key points. Firstly to all those West Ham hating tabloids *cough* The Mirror, Rob Green is the form keeper at the minute. He’s playing week in week out and is invariably consistent. David James is pushing 40 come the start of the World Cup and Ben Foster will not be playing ahead of Van De Sar at United…so perhaps it’s time to get behind the nation’s best at the minute and allow him to play comfortably each week. He may have been sent off, but frankly Rio’s lack of concentration hardly left Green with any other option but to come out and attempt to win the ball…any keeper in his position would have done exactly the same thing, likely with the same consequences.
Which leads me onto my second point; Rio. If Capello is picking players based on form then there are a handful defenders who should have been selected ahead of a Ferdinand, who is lacking both match sharpness and form. His last two England outings have drawn a couple of major mistakes and he also made a clanger for United against Citeh the other day.
So of course, using Capello’s logic, Rio should be dropped? Well I doubt it.
But how many people will be calling for Green to be dropped? Plenty, I’m sure.
Perhaps it’s time for the press to come to terms with the fact that a player outside of the top 4 is the best in his position in the country and get behind Rob Green.
England’s number one.

Definitely agree, keepers are always the fall guys in these situations. Rio had a much simpler piece of defending to do, and his failure to do so gave Green a tough decision. And, unlike a lot of these penalties, the Ukranian was definitely in on goal, so Green had to come out at the speed he did. If he stays on his feet, it’s probably a goal.

Yeah, it was very much a catch twenty-two situation; he did all he could. Like you say, James is getting on a bit, so hopefully Rob Green will be able to make it back into the starting line up. Regardless of how much the media like to bash West Ham, I’m still confident he’ll be playing in the World Cup. As for Rio, if he’s not ready then there are always other options. As always though, we’ll have to wait and see what the manager’s decision turns out to be.

Well, in the last game against Fulham Rob Green had a day off. The second goal was his fault and West Ham were lucky not to concede a 3rd one when he came out in the last minute of added time and was unable to clear. Although I think that Rob Green has to remain England’s No. 1! But 75 % in a Guardian survey think he should not!
