‘Smug’ Bolton 3 – 1 ‘Sorry’ West Ham

“Unusually confident for some reason. I’m sure there’s every chance this will come back to bite me – but I’ll happily take that risk”
Sam H – 16/12/09 – The Makings of an Epic

It did.

It would seem that Bolton had every right to be smug about last night’s fixture. And I’m sure had they known the lacklusture, painful, aching performance that we were going to take to their place, that actually they would have been even more confident. Their pre-match confidence was not undue and frankly, once again, they deserved their result.

Currently we are a sorry reflection of the enthusiastic, passing side that ended last season – and that we all thought would start this season. Maybe it’s fair to point part of the blame on injuries. But not all of it. The rest of the blame must surely lie firmly on the shoulders of Harry Redknapp and Terrence Brown. Tongue firmly in cheek.

The club is crying out for a shake up, we’re squandering and stagnating in an era past, defined by the Tevez saga and the financial meltdown of an entire nation and we need to push on from that now. The need for a takeover is even more pressing even if it is to just breathe some new life into what is fast become a side with confidence lower than any one of Tiger Wood’s mistresses’ pants.

I hold my hands up and say “well done” to Bolton after last night. I was unusually confident before the game and I’m left seriously questioning whether we have what it takes to stay up this year. Unless there is an injection not of cash but of vibrancy, bringing a buzz back to the place again then we are in for a long, long season. As fans we can be part of that – it’s hard to do but uninhibited support of our West Ham in the face of what has thus far been a shocking season, under the floodlights of Upton Park on Sunday is going to do more good to the players’ confidence than boos, jeers and calls for anyone’s head.

Then again, if we witness another performance devoid of passion and direction – against London rivals – ‘those’ question marks will grow ever heavier. And murmurings of discontent will, I’m sure, become far more than that.

    1. This is when we will see if any of the players excecise their contract rights to leave (jumpship)if we loose anyone in Jan, then that is a sign that the club is on its way down, as a player who wants to stay and fight usually has belief, a player who jumps ship can smell the sh*t and doesnt want to be in a team thats going down. Bye Parker/green/noble/cole/upson……

    2. Well sam you hit the nail on the head when it comes to performances.

i really do hate the talk of “it could of been the start of our season”, sorry to put a spanner in the works but unfortunatly our season started when we done wolves 2-0 on the opening day… but however you look at that, we lost one of the main players after our second game… Consistant Collins. yeah we did need money for a striker but our transfer policies have never been right since the pardew days… to this day i still think pardew should of stayed at west ham as manager. he had a right philosphy at the club, bringing in hungry players, i think the fans really dont give him enough credit. Benayoun, Konchesky. Harewood, Reo-Coker, COLLINS, ASHTON, Etherington, Zamora… it’s sickening. pards bought the most obvious of players and get obvious performances, and he brought cole in too… yes his personal life got in the way of his job, and the club mnade him a scapegoat for poor performances.. i just think zola’s got the right idea how to play football, but he has no experience in transfers… he needs to put his “potential” rule book down and concentrate on players who are “proven”. i like zola, but i still belive pardew should be manager to this day.

i hope that the ownership details are finalised for christmas as then we need to up the ante in the market and be beating teams like bolton.

who would you recommend as suitable players to be wearing the claret and blue shirt… i know who i would buy… and it wouldn;t be their first spell at the hammers…

      • I’ve not got a clue who we should bring in to help cure this tbh. I’m not even sure we need to bring many people in at all…I just think the ‘down in the dumps’ mentality needs to change.

I think Diamaniti needs to start along with Franco. They’re the two players who have shown intense passion for the cause. I think Parker has been quality this year but he can’t do it on his own in midfield.

I also think that one of the main problems is not having a consistent backline for enough of the season. It’s keeps getting chopped and changed and we need to settle on it, injuries permitting, and stick with it.

        Injries, injuries, injuries. They’re rubbish

    3. Fair play to you Sam for eating humble pie, and thanks for yesterday’s plug for my ‘Smug’ article on Vital Bolton.

West Ham were by far the better side in last year’s fixture and we were lucky to get the win. They look a shadow of that team now.

Granted, that injuries have played their part, but there seems to be a real lack of spirit there.
